The early days

Looking back on the beginning of my artistic journey, I remember that the seeds for my love of artistic drawing and painting were sown in my childhood. As a child, I used to make innumerable works. Who doesn't, after all?  Moreover, my rich fantasy world was a source of fruitful inspiration. The days of formal training in contemporary figurative work, as well as exhibitions, were still far off in the future. I did however win the first prize in the drawing competition of the local primary school. At this stage, the viewers of my work were my family and classmates.

To the art academy

I only became a student at the art academy in my late twenties.I returned to my beloved drawing and painting. I attended the art academies of Aarschot and Heist-op-den-Berg.
I developed a predilection for contemporary figurative work. The advice and encouragement of my teachers and especially the favourable feedback from family and friends motivated me to exhibit my works.

Belgicart

Therefore, I decided to register with Belgicart, an organization of the Brussels' art house BOZAR..
The competition aimed at 'discovering the work of lesser-known Belgian artists to reflect the hidden artistic wealth of our country'.

In early 2020, I received the good news that painter Sam Dillemans had selected my work for exhibition among more than 1,000 submissions. However, the planned exhibition was cancelled because of the corona crisis and a blazing fire at BOZAR. Nevertheless, a fresh opportunity arose to exhibit my works.

The first exhibition as a contemporary figurative artist

The IJsberg Foundation decided to take over the organization of the exhibition. Finally, my work was shown to the public during the summer of 2021. However, this was not my debut, as I had been invited to participate in the exhibition at the Zwanenberg cultural centre in Heist-op-den-Berg in the Autumn of 2020..

Things started to take off from there. Although I still get the highest satisfaction from the creative process, I am always curious to discover the effect of my works on other people. Exhibitions are an exciting and obviously very pleasant bonus.

Het prille begin

Als kind maakte ik talloze kunstwerkjes. Wie niet trouwens? Ik tekende en schilderde wat ik rondom mij zag. Voorts vormde ook mijn rijke fantasiewereld een vruchtbare inspiratiebron. Van een opleiding en hedendaags figuratief werk, om nog maar te zwijgen over tentoonstellingen, was nog lang geen sprake. Mijn familie en hooguit enkele vriendinnetjes, meer mensen kregen mijn tekeningen en schilderwerkjes op dat moment nog niet te zien."

Naar de academie

"Naar de kunstacademie ging ik pas op het einde van mijn twintiger jaren.  Ik zette de stap naar de kunstacademies van Aarschot en Heist-op-den-Berg. Achtereenvolgens volgde ik 8 jaar tekenkunst, 2 jaar specialisatie tekenkunst, 5 jaar schilderkunst en tot slot 2 jaar specialisatie schilderkunst. Doorheen die periode ontwikkelde ik een voorliefde voor hedendaags figuratief werk. De adviezen en aanmoedigingen van mijn leerkrachten en vooral de positieve reacties van familie en vrienden motiveerden me om met mijn werken naar buiten te treden."

Belgicart

"Zo besloot ik mij in te schrijven voor Belgicart, een organisatie van het Brusselse kunstenhuis BOZAR. Het doel van deze wedstrijd is 'het werk van minder bekende Belgische kunstenaars ontdekken om op die manier de verborgen artistieke rijkdom van ons land te weerspiegelen'."

"Begin 2020 kreeg ik het goede nieuws dat mijn werk door kunstschilder Sam Dillemans uit de meer dan 1000 inzendingen was gekozen om tentoongesteld te worden. De coronacrisis en een uitslaande brand in BOZAR strooiden echter roet in het eten. Maar uitstel bleek geen afstel."

De eerste tentoonstellingen als hedendaags figuratief kunstenaar

"De Stichting IJsberg besliste de organisatie over te nemen en zo werd mijn werk in de zomer van 2021 toch aan het grote publiek getoond. Mijn 'debuut' was dat echter niet. In het najaar van 2020 mocht ik ook al exposeren tijdens een tentoonstelling in Cultuurcentrum Zwanenberg."

"Zo ging de bal aan het rollen. Hoewel ik de grootste voldoening blijf halen uit het creëren zelf, ben ik uiteraard altijd benieuwd naar wat mijn werken losmaken bij andere mensen. Het exposeren beschouw ik als een spannend maar uiteraard heel leuk extraatje."
